addicted to twitter

slowly but surely i am acquiring an insidious addition to twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/gakisama
That gakisama twitter account though, was mean to be a twitter account for posting tweets about art: others art and my own.

But oh man, sometimes i just want to rant at nothing and its flooding my gakisama tweet feed with more randomshit than arty stuff.

I wonder if I should just make a separate twitter account for ranting. hmm..
or should I make a new art twitter account, and let the gakisama account be for ranting...

or maybe, i should just start populating my tweets there with art.. more art than random shit, and go ahead and let that one be as it is.. but just exercise some self control.. .. hmmm!

first get together thingy at the new place

So, right now, the first (to my knowledge) planned get together at our new place is underway.  We've had visitors and stuff, but this is the first time were going to have visitors, plus dinner, plus some planned social activity (games, card games), plus all us roomies.

It'll be cool and fun, but I hope there are not too many of these. theres only so much loud fun I can handle at such proximity to where I live (as in in my bedroom).  Its a couple weeks before finals though, and I don't have any other pending deadlines this month, so it's all good.

On a separate but related note, one of my roomies is preparing dinner right now, with her latest beau. I can't help but be a little bummed that me and my ex could have done stuff like that if he weren't such a kitchen nazi. I knew he could be somewhat fussy in the kitchen, but I didn't know it was a dealbreaker for him that I must be as fussy as he in order for us to get along.  Oh well.

One day I shall make a list of the pros and cons of that past relationship, so I can convince myself once and for all that were better off apart.

for tonight though, its enough for me to be vicariously satisified through my roomie that at least shes got a guy to do stuffs with. As long as its not too much gatherings and social times at our place. ;p Or if it is, that its not too loud so that i can be more efficiently antisocial when i need to be. ;p

sleepy

so, i am sleepy, and not finished packing and i should be either sleeping or packing at the moment. but instead, i am blogging. about what, I don't know.

hmmm..

well..

People are nice. when i was moving boxes down some stairs the other day, two strangers in my building offered to help me. I accepted help from the first one who offered, because i was using my forehead to keep my poorly packed dishrack from falling out of the box at the time, and it was awkward to go down the stairs like that. So I accepted help from him.

Another lady offered me help when she saw I had a different biggish box. I didn't need her help though, because the box was light.

Some of my friends/acquaintances are helping me move too, tomorrow. Some of them offered, and some of them I asked. They all seemed ready and willing to do it. I started out with this ambitious plan to move all but the largest of my items from my apartment on my own.. in fact i think i have moved about 70% of my apt on my own.. but as its getting close to moving hour, my lazy is kicking it into high gear and is primed and ready to have me on a rigorous schedule of slacking off.

So I have this remaining bit.. its more than I planned to have left over for my friends to help me move.. but I think its ok. cuz people are nice. they are nice people.

why not clinical psychology

a lot of clinical psychology (not all, but a lot) to me, reads like philosophy with statistics.

There was a reason why I was hesitant on psychology when I was in hs, and it wasn't just that I wanted to try animation first. psychology is interesting, especially in its breadth, but in depth of understanding, its somewhat unsatisfying. A lot of that is because, it reads like philosophy with statistics.

Professionally:
Increasingly, the clinical work that psychologists do, is being passed on to social workers, who "do the same thing, but for cheaper" (I don't think this is really true, i respect the clinical training and the appreciation for research that psychologists get, above what I *assume* social workers get).

This is, to me, part of the reason why psychologists want prescriptive rights. It expands their utility and therefore earning power, in ways that social workers can't (yet) impinge on (I'm against psychologists having prescriptive rights, btw. If these controversial meds are already prescribed in controversial ways, then expanding the population of those who can prescribe it is a good idea why?).

Research:
Sometimes, psychologists are hired for their experience as statisticians, and not for their understanding of their field.

But if you really want some serious number crunching you will hire a crazy math person. Like in "This Tech Bubble Is Different" .. that is how you kick ass with data on human behavior.

And I really don't want to be a crazy math person.

And the research that individual psychologists come up with to study human behavior... sorry to say.. is weakened by the fact that most of them are not crazy math people. their sample sizes are often small. Their research is hard to generalize as a 'great truth,' but tends to be more context specific (to the state, survey, socio-economic class in a specific ghetto, etc).
Someone could (and people do) potentially weed out the good stuff from the noise of weak work, and recognize patterns and trends, i guess.. or...

someone could make something like facebook and gather crazy amounts of data, and have some stats with real power to it. and their tactics work, because if didn't they wouldn't be filthy fucking rich.

psychologists, anyone who wants to study human behavior, would do well to see how these research strategies would apply to their own work. I don't know that anyone is doing that now. In this schools psychology dept, where I am at now, I see paper pencil surveys, theories, research into past literature.. but nothing really forward thinking.. nothing that really sees a way to use technology in an ambitious way that could really change the way data is gathered towards academic or clinical research. My psych peers are on facebook themselves, and I don't know if the realize they are being studied in a way far more insidious and effective than anything they have concocted.

But even if they did up their game... it would still feel a lot like philosophy with statistics.

and again, I don't want to be a crazy math person.

But im thinking.. i would like to be a crazy neuro person.

long road to nowhere

I have taken a somewhat circuitous route in getting to the nowhere I am today. When I was fresh out of high school, I was thinking of animation or psychology for my future. I got a free ride at a state university so I went there for two years, then decided if I was going to fuck up as a dumb artist, I may as well do it while I'm young. So I went for animation. Then:

I added on art therapy. (just in case the "animation thing" didn't work out)

I work in animation a little bit. (but i didn't like always having to look for new work, which was due to the model in nyc.. everyone freelanced)

I ended up going back to school. (psychology again? or perhaps psychiatry?)

I got into med school. (to get in, i lied. i said their PBL [problem based learning] in med school was fine for me, but it wasn't, so i shot myself in the foot with that. plus the stress! the whole 'med school culture'. the stress of being back in my home state, where all my family, and people from my childhood are. i seriously need to get out of here.)

I flunked out of med school. (i was thinking 'yeah, clinical psych')

I went back to undergrad. (took some grad level clinical psych classes to try them out. i took a neurosci class. i got into a clinical psych lab, and a neurosci lab..)

I considered clinical psychology, but now...

I'm really leaning towards neuroscience.

linking back

I keep vacillating between linking my bakiglog ("art" blog) back to this main one, or not.

the twitter account associated with it, gakisama, is sort of my main socializing one, and will be turning into more of an arty one over time. my friends in general that are on twitter are on that one. my profile on that twitter account, has a link to the bakiglog art one. but the bakiglog art blog does not link back to this, my main blog.

part of the reasoning for not linking back is that supposedly my "art" stuff is for vaguely (not definitely) more "professional" purposes. So I should keep my personal stuff out of it, right?

But then, the fact of the matter is that my "art" twitter account really also doubles as a general friend account, so when I think of them, I feel like linking my art blog to my general blog, but.. meh.

i have a different twitter account, alzrant, which links back to an alzheimer's/depression blog. that blog *does* link back to this main blog.

part of the reasoning for linking back is that i somehow think its a good idea for someone who reads all the shitty stuff in my alzrant blog and twitter account to see (if they were curious enough) that im more than just a miserable person. im actually a regular person who has some miserable stuff floating around sometimes.

well whatever. i am thinking too much about this. i will just leave it unlinked.
for now. i think. i dunno. bah!

crazy cycle

One of my friends' wives, C, is having a hard time. She's got two kids; one from her current marriage, and one from a previous marriage. Her husband, my friend, has left the country to pursue academics. He will come back, but appears to have been mostly MIA for months, at least relative to her.
Some of the worst part, for her, is not knowing. We've talked about this. She doesn't know if he wants to try again, how he feels, if she should move on. She doesn't know where he stands. She's got two kids, and one of them is his. He seemed like such a good man. and.. he's my friend.

She asked me on the phone for some advice. It's complicated.. theres a lot of story. But the bottom line is that shes waiting for a clue from him as to what she should do.

He's told me once, a long long time ago, that hes openly invited her to go see other people. That he hopes she asks for a divorce. I never told her that. It was in confidence.

So I tell her... why wait for him to decide... if you can't take it any more, then you decide when its over. It seems like the answer is not coming from him. So maybe, for your sake, for your kids sake.. you should decide.

I tell him... what you are doing is cruel. If you are the one who definitely wants the divorce, then you should just do it. Instead you are jerking her around. You don't want to be the bad guy, but you would be doing her a favor by just manning up and telling her how you really feel.

It's really kind of awkward. I really sympathize with her. but I'm closer friends with him. And really, neither is a saint.

----

Simultaneously, though it's not in the same "phase" of a relationship/friendship (or whats left of one).. I am going through a parallel (though not nearly as dire) situation myself. Me and my ex broke up. It's complicated. Theres a lot of back and forth.

In some ways, I want/wanted (I vacillate) to give it another try. Whichever the case, I wanted to "engage" again, to interact again. I wanted answers and resolution, and closure. He wanted his space.

His best friend, closer to him, tells me that I can decide when its done on my own. That when its over doesn't have to depend on what responses he does or doesn't give me. She's right. So I try to give up. But it's hard.

I'm dumb like that sometimes. Just like my friend's wife is dumb like that.

Just like my guy friend who can't give up on this girl he likes.. is dumb like that.

Just like, I can only guess, millions of us are dumb like that. :/

doin stuff

A. so, I've got a few possibilities for summer research:
1. VA center study on virtual reality and PTSD .. some kind of volunteering thing. They said I could start right away.
2. MRI studies at the local med school. (need resume/cv for this)
3. Buddy up with some friends at the med school and do some research with them, possibly also with MRI stuff.
4. Already locked in - studying fear learning and extinction in rats.
5. I'll be leaving - clinical lab. I think I'm done there. Ask supervisor for a LOR.

B. I have a strategy and rough timeline for my application process for applying to grad schools:
1.
geography - east coast, tristate, west coast, AZ, Penn.
program
mentor
key terms: genetics, neuroendocrinology, MRI/EEG/brain imaging, fear, trauma ... the more i look at what i care about learning, the less i see it has to do with clinical. but i'm not sure i want to give up on clinical side yet.
2. work on resume/CV
3. have it narrowed down to 5(to 8) schools and a couple of specific folks at each school, by end of June, then start emailing them.
4. work on statement.
5. take that goddamned GRE in June.

C. I've also got the start of some plan to possibly see if i can squeeze in getting another degree with minimal additional effort, considering my long, arduous, dubiously-useful-at-best-career as a student.

D. Work on the childrens books. goal is to complete 3 this summer. Who fucking knows how realistic it will be to actually get them published though. We shall see.
from the park you hear happy sounds from a carousellll.....
you can almost taste the hotdogs and french fries they selllll..

underrr the boaardwalkkk.. down by the seaaaaa....

on a blanket with mah bayybeh.. is where illl beeee...
